Recently, D.C. Unity and Justice fellowship had the pleasure of facilitating a two-day event with the vivacious and passionate, Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil. Our friends at Christ Our Shepard Church graciously hosted, while those in attendance were able to learn about one of Dr.Brenda’s top priorities; racial justice and unity in the body of Christ. Her Saturday workshop ‘Where Do Leaders Come From?’ was anchored in the story of Esther which has understandably been in the forefront of many church sermons in recent years. Dr. Brenda spoke of the things we can learn from Esther ‘for such a time as this,’ a time when injustice, oppression and hatred seem to dominate conversations in our culture.

What resonated with me most in the two days I was privileged to learn from Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil, was her insistence that ‘the days of the single superstar are over.’ In order to stand against the evil injustice in today’s society, we must walk in our own purpose, side by side, committed to bringing light into the darkest places. She cited the importance of impacting your circle of influence to bring change and speaking for those who can’t speak for themselves.

“You can’t let the privilege of the palace enable you to forget about the people,” she said.

I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Brenda, we must commit to doing what we can for those around us, we must stand in the gap, like Esther and intercede, not just for ourselves but for the generations to follow.
